Does Your Message Need a Refresh?

In the past 2 years, every business, from start-up to giant corporation, has had to shift their approach to business. To say things have changed is a serious understatement. We’ve had a wild ride on the corona-coaster, and now, as the presence of COVID-19 shifts from state-of-emergency to fact-of-life, it’s time to think ahead to what is your new normal - for your corporate messaging.

There’s a whole new set of challenges. You need to make connections in more meaningful ways to win the hearts and minds of your target audience. You’ve likely had to shift your business model, and some of the things that were unique differentiators in the past may no longer be relevant. Today, your customers, consumers and your employees want to know that you get it. They want to see evidence that you have real awareness and a genuine commitment to make a positive difference.

The way you describe your company and what you do is fundamental to meeting these challenges head on – yet many companies are still talking like it’s 2019.

This moment in time is a perfect opportunity to refresh your messaging. A refresh will ensure that what people see when they look at your website and your social media content, or hear a presentation or podcast from one of your team is working for you and not against you.

Here’s a simple test to see if it’s time for you to rethink what you’re saying.

Ask yourself, “What does <my company> do?” Now ask 3 of your clients or colleagues. Are your answers the same?

If you can’t confidently answer yes, there is work to be done.

You need to go back to basics and clearly define what you do, who you do it for, why it matters and how what you do is different than your competition. Then you need to make sure this shows up in all the right places – internally and externally.

A messaging refresh is a high value initiative that can move the needle on business results. It’s not easy, but with the right approach and some expert guidance, you can get turn your messaging of yesterday into fresh communication for today.
